How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia? A Straight Answer

Quotes for the same brief range from $500 to $50,000. Here is what actually drives the number, and what you should expect at each price point.

Ask five Australian agencies to quote the same website and you will get five very different numbers. That is not because four of them are wrong — it is because "a website" describes anything from a one-page template to a custom platform with integrations.

Here is an honest breakdown of what the market actually looks like.

$500 – $1,500: DIY and template builds

A Wix, Squarespace or Shopify template that you or a freelancer configures. You get something live and functional.

What you generally do not get: a strategy for what the pages should say, real SEO structure, custom design, or someone to call when it breaks. Reasonable for testing an idea. Limiting once you are trying to compete for search traffic.

$1,800 – $5,000: professional small business site

This is where most Australian small businesses land, and where our own builds start. Expect a custom design, five to ten pages, mobile-first development, on-page SEO, forms with proper tracking, and training so you can update it yourself.

At this level you should be getting a website built around a specific goal — usually enquiries — rather than just a set of pages describing your business.

$5,000 – $15,000: larger or more complex builds

Multi-location businesses, bookings or membership systems, CRM integration, professional copywriting, custom photography, or 20+ pages including a full suburb landing page set.

Ecommerce generally starts around here too, once you factor in payment gateways, shipping logic, GST configuration and product page structure.

$15,000+: custom platforms

Bespoke applications, customer portals, complex integrations or high-volume ecommerce. At this level you are buying software, not a website.

What actually drives the price

  • Page count — each unique page needs design, content and testing
  • Who writes the copy — professional copywriting adds real cost, and real conversion
  • Custom versus template design — the single biggest lever
  • Integrations — bookings, CRM, payments and inventory each add scope
  • SEO depth — basic on-page setup versus a full local SEO build
  • Photography — stock is cheap, a shoot is not, but it changes how established you look

The costs people forget

Budget for these annually, whoever builds your site:

  • Domain: $15 – $40 per year for a .com.au
  • Hosting: $120 – $600 per year depending on traffic and support
  • SSL certificate: usually included with good hosting
  • Maintenance and updates: $99 – $300 per month, or your own time
  • Content updates: either your hours or an agency's

How to compare quotes properly

Line up quotes on scope, not just price. Ask each one: how many pages, who writes the content, how many revision rounds, what SEO work is included, who owns the site at the end, and what happens after launch. Cheap quotes usually get cheap by removing content, revisions or ownership — the parts you notice later.

The question worth asking

Not "what does a website cost" but "what is an enquiry worth to me". If a new customer is worth $2,000 and a better website brings you two extra a month, a $5,000 site pays for itself inside a quarter. If a customer is worth $80, the maths is different and the build should be simpler.
